Notes on Salsa

In Notes on Salsa, I referred to  Adrian’s Piper seminal work Funk Lessons to question current notions of nationality as intrinsic, innate, and natural-occurring. During the residency at “Limited Contract”, I conducted Salsa Lessons with people from diverse backgrounds in the form of a workshop-performance tracking the history of Salsa while breaking down its basic steps.

Making accessible the idiom of Salsa to Zürich’s population through listening by dancing this work proposed the residency as a space for “mixture” and regeneration, as a place of thoughts in action about the increasing mobility around the globe where the ideas of the nationality and citizenship still hierarchically divides populations into “locals” and “aliens”.
